About PIMIL

PIMIL is the acronym for Partners-in-Ministry-in-Liberia. PIMIL was established in January 2005 at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, Westerville, Ohio.

PIMIL evolved from the “Liberian Ministry” which was a ministry of St. Matthew’s from 1998 to 2004. PIMIL is an outreach scholarship assistance program to assist families of children who live below the United Nations defined poverty level on less than $1.90 a day. That assistance now includes the Ebola orphans and since 2020, COVID-19 orphans.

The PIMIL mission through education is as follows:

  • Demonstrating God’s love through Jesus

  • Building Lives

  • Restoring Hope

  • Enabling Dreams

  • Building Liberia

  • Fulfilling the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals

PIMIL receives funding from a variety of sources including individuals, student sponsors, churches, fundraising events such as a street festival and jewelry sale, Diocesan grant, families, businesses and church organizations.

In 2021, PIMIL paid tuition costs for 215 students. A record number of twenty-six new students were added to the PIMIL program in 2021. Annual tuition costs total $43,000 for two semesters for the 216 sponsored students in 2021. The increase in student enrollment and tuition costs was because of COVID-19.  Students were orphaned and parents were unemployed.

In the seventeen years since the establishment of Partners-in-Ministry-in-Liberia, 2005-2022, students who were sponsored by PIMIL engage in many different careers: as nurses, entrepreneurs, a corporate executive, bankers, lawyers, criminal justice workers, prospective diplomats, and a social worker and field supervisor of the World Health Organization accredited to Liberia. Other highlights:

  • Leaders of workshops in Ebola prevention in 2014-2016

  • Nurse in Ebola Treatment Unit field hospitals in 2014-2016

  • Establishment of a Diagnostic Health Center

  • Coordinator of the Government nursing program of local areas

  • Executive at a local Firestone Corporation

  • An aspiring foreign service agent

  • Conducted a mission trip to Liberia in April 2018

  • Had Liberians as guest speakers at the Annual Fundraising Luncheons

  • Established The PIMIL Association-Liberia to “foster” mutual relationships among the PIMIL family in Liberia and between Liberia and the United States
